What “Real-Time” Actually Means for Product Teams
Latency windows, not marketing adjectives—how to set expectations everyone can share.
Real-time is a promise with a clock attached. For product analytics, the useful question is not “is it live?” but “within how many seconds or minutes must this signal arrive to change a decision?”
A release-day conversion watch might need sub-minute freshness. A weekly engagement pulse can tolerate longer windows. Write the window next to the metric so stakeholders stop arguing about freshness in the abstract.
When teams share the same latency language, alert design and briefing cadence become straightforward instead of political.
